Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).
There are over a hundred different types of HPV, but most genital warts
are just caused by two different types (types 6 and 11). Other types of
HPV can cause changes in the cervix which may lead to the development
of cervical cancer. This is why regular cervical screening is recommended.
Up to eighteen months can pass from the time of infection with the genital
wart virus to the actual development of warts. Most sexually active people
have been infected with the wart virus, but only a small percentage of
people develop warts. Warts may proliferate when the immune system is
weakened or during pregnancy.
Diagnosis
Warts are raised, rough growths that may occur singly or in clusters.
In men, they are usually found around the head of the penis or around
the anus. In women, they appear most often around the vaginal opening
and may spread to the rectal area. They are diagnosed by their appearance
and sometimes by applying freezing spray: warts will stay frozen longer
than normal skin.
Treatment
At Clinic Express we prescribe one of two possible creams for you to use
at home, and/or we treat the warts by freezing. Most warts will clear
within weeks, but they may recur. However, the body usually develops immunity
to them within a year or so.
As warts are a sexually transmitted infection, we would recommend that
if you have warts that you also have full screening for other sexually
transmitted infections and diseases.
Patents can walk in and be seen without an appointment, and if necessary
